Directorate of oil palm Research serves as a centre for conducting and coordinating research under four main section that are interconnected

Genetic Resource Management

Crop Management and Post Harvest Technology

Crop Protection

Social Sciences

The Genetic Resource Management section is in the process of identification of high yielding varieties having distinct characteristics of high oil extraction rates, compact canopy and drought tolerance.  Research have been taken up to develop DNA marker traits like shell thickness and fruit colour and identification of elite material to resolve IPR issues.  DOPR is working on standardization of protocol for clonal propagation of elite oil palm species.

The section on Crop Management and Post Harvest Technology is working on the water management and nutrient management of oil palm in the irrigated conditions.  Mapping physiological traits for higher productivity and stability is an area where ongoing research shows tremendous potential.  Biochemical studies like formation of oil and changes in oil quality from anthesis to bunch maturity, seasonal variation in oil formation and quality and variation in oil content and quality within a bunch as well as fruits are being investigated.  Research on various aspects of post harvest studies on oil palm and devising a mechanized harvesting tool suitable for harvesting the fresh fruit bunches is also being done.

The Crop Protection section is involved in the research pertaining to the various pests and diseases of oil palm in the country.  The various symptoms for the pests and diseases and their control measures is being studied.

The Social Sciences section is actively engaged in technology assessment, dissemination and promoting the various technologies developed, among farming community through exhibitions, field visits and group meetings.  Country wise statistics on oil palm are collected and maintained for effective information retrieval.  Development of databases and software are being taken up for effective transmission of information.
